Why Travel Retail, Like Luxury, Is About Emotions

Marco Passoni

As a professional who has spent a lifetime in the travel retail industry, now supporting luxury brands in their travel retail development, I can say I am pretty familiar with both fields and I notice the similarities between them every day.

Travel retail, like luxury, is fundamentally about emotions. This is not just because of the nature of the products being sold, but because of the unique mindset of travellers. Unlike traditional retail shoppers, travellers are in a different emotional state – open, curious, and receptive to experiences that make them dream.

Airports are places of transition, excitement, anticipation, and sometimes nostalgia. In this context, the ability to tell a story, to create an experience that resonates with a traveller’s aspirations, makes all the difference. Whether it’s a fragrance that evokes the romance of an exotic destination, a fine whisky that speaks of craftsmanship and tradition, or a fashion piece that symbolizes a moment of indulgence, travel retail has the opportunity to touch customers at a deeper level.

Airports are places of transition, excitement, anticipation, and sometimes nostalgia…travel retail has the opportunity to touch customers at a deeper level.

Unlike downtown retail, where customers often shop with a purpose, travel retail thrives on impulse, discovery, and a sense of occasion. The mindset of a traveller is different: they are more open to serendipity, more willing to engage in experiences, and, importantly, more receptive to emotional storytelling. The ability to connect with them in this state is a competitive advantage that few brands truly leverage.

In a world saturated with choices, the brands that succeed are those that go beyond transactions and create a lasting impression. This is why customer engagement in travel retail should not just be about promotions or discounts—it should be about immersion, emotion, and exclusivity. The most successful brands in travel retail do not just communicate what they sell; they communicate why it matters.

To create this emotional connection, it is not enough to have a great story – you need to ensure it is delivered consistently across all touchpoints. This is where the role of frontline staff becomes critical. From retail associates to beauty advisors and F&B servers, the ability to convey a brand’s story with genuine enthusiasm and empathy is what transforms a simple transaction into a memorable experience.

The mindset of a traveller is different…the ability to connect with them in this state is a competitive advantage that few brands truly leverage.

Too often, I see luxury brands investing millions in marketing campaigns, but failing to ensure their staff embodies the same story in-store. The best airport retail environments are those where staff understand the emotional triggers of their customers and create moments of human connection.

Travel retail is a unique ecosystem, and its success depends on more than just product placement and pricing strategies. It thrives on emotion, storytelling, and human connection. Brands that understand this and execute it flawlessly will continue to thrive. Those that see travel retail as merely an extension of downtown retail—without adapting to the emotional nuances of the travelling consumer—will struggle to create real impact.

Luxury has always been about more than just products. It is about experiences, aspiration, and belonging. Travel retail, when done right, offers the perfect environment to bring this to life. Brands that master the art of emotional engagement in travel retail will not only drive sales but will build lasting relationships with their customers, turning fleeting moments into lifelong memories.
